Chinese and local
Like the French factory, the Hungarian with its 60,000 square meters is basically an assembly plant. From the beginning, it was thought that only buses would be built here, but BYD also plans to build trucks and other commercial vehicles in Komárom. It aims to premiere its first truck at the IAA trade fair in Hanover in the autumn of 2020.
The facility in Komárom is strikingly modern and well-organized. From China, the chassis are delivered in stainless steel, as well as driveline and batteries. Here, bodies, interiors and more are mounted - largely in aluminum and plastic to keep the weight down because low weight means lower energy consumption. And for electric buses, it is central to keep energy consumption down. But some lightweight buses are not BYD's electric buses with their 18 tons.
- It is technically possible to reduce the weight. We are looking at solutions, but it is too early to say more, commented the factory's operations manager Gábor Balogh during our visit.
However, not everything in the buses is made in China. Much also comes from local or European manufacturers.
The windows thus come from Pilkington, the doors from Masats and Ventura, the roof from Pecocar and so on. According to BYD, ten percent of the electrical system comes from local manufacturers, as well as 30 percent of the driveline, 45 percent of the body and 50 percent of the interior.
