Veggie Trader Makes Swapping Homegrown Produce Easy

Too many tomatoes? Too few fava beans? Why not swap them with Veggie Trader, a brand new online community for gardeners and eaters alike. On the site you can list fruits, veggies and herbs and either negotiate a trade or just plain buy and sell them. And beyond supporting at-home gardening and fresh eats, Veggie Trader also hopes to build communities of gardeners by encouraging users to plan their harvest and specialize in certain crops.

Veggie Trader’s groups involve people from the same areas banding together for regular swaps. Each person contributes their specialty—say you’ve got a lemon tree in your backyard or the sweetest thai basil in town. Produce enough to share with your community at regular swaps. It’s been about a month since Veggie Trader launched and the seeds still germinating, so pickings are understandably slim. Now is your chance to sow a few extra rows of your local specialty and start planning ahead for the harvest. Never gardened before? This is the perfect economy to start in. Its not too late to get some seeds in the ground—the Obamas did it!

Izbegnite kvantaš, napravite ebay za prodaju voća i povrća na malo. Ili razmenu. Jednostavno, ljudi naprave sajt, obiđu zainteresovana domaćinstva u okolini Beograda (objasniću zašto), odrede minimum standarda za kvalitet voća i povrća(može i da se uvede posebna kategorija organskog) i naprave im nalog na sajtu. Što više informacija o proizvođaču i njivi to veće šanse za prodaju. Voće i povrće se pakuje i šalje kurirskom službom. Zato ne verujem da će se isplatiti poljoprivrednicima van beogradskih opština da se uključe jer bi troškovi transporta bili suviše veliki. Sistem ocenjivanja kvaliteta kako proizvoda tako i prodavca može da se preuzme od ebay-a. I vršiti periodične blic kontrole, da se ne desi da neko organsko povrće kljuka steroidima.

Ovde treba još dosta mozganja, kako biti konkurentan cenom i kvalitetom kako pijacama tako i supermarketima. Ali, ako cena bude niža od cene koju naplaćuje supermarket plus dostava, verujem da koncept ima lepu budučnost.

PKB da ostane državi na upravljanje

Ministarstvo poljoprivrede Srbije neće dozvoliti privatizaciju PKB, kako bi neko dobio jeftino zemljište, rekao je juče ministar Saša Dragin prilikom posete imanju PKB-a i istakao da bi u narednih mesec dana trebalo da se pronađe model za rešavanje statusa ovog kombinata.

On je rekao da je o statusu PKB na sastanku u ponedeljak razgovarao sa gradonačelnikom Draganom Đilasom, kao i predstavnicima PKB, Ministarstva ekonomije i Agencije za privatizaciju. Tada je dogovoreno da se vidi na koji način treba da se optimizuje rad PKB, ali i PIK-a Zemun i kombinata „Dragan Marković“ iz Obrenovca, koji bi trebalo da se pripoje PKB - u. On je dodao da je između ostalog potrebno uraditi analizu potraživanja, odrediti vrednost parcela, razmotri Generalni urbanistički plan grada i naveo da bi novi sastanak trebalo da bude održan u narednih mesec dana.

Takođe, ponovio je da je očuvanje PKB pod okriljem države važno zbog prehrambene sigurnosti građana, jer Srbija terenutno nema nijedan tako veliki poljoprivredni kombinat. Dragin je naveo da je Ministarstvo sprečilo aukciju zakazanu za 15. maj na kojoj je trebalo da bude prodat PIK „Zemun“, jer je uvidom u dokumentaciju utvrđeno da postoje nerealna potraživanja dugovanja i dodao da će podržati incijativu sindikata zaposlenih da se pripoje PKB.
Milan Veljović, direktor PKB Korporacije rekao je da se radi i na pripajanju kombinata „Dragan Marković” iz Obrenovca u restrukturiranju PKB-u, ali da pre toga moraju da se reše dugovanja, kako ne bi pala na teret PKB - a. Po ukidanju faze restrukturiranja, kaže on, taj kombinat bio bi u blokadi od oko 600 miliona dinara, jer je za vreme te faze naplata prispelih potraživanja onemogućena. On je naveo da bi trebalo da se dogovori šta će od dugova da preuzme država, odnosno da li će biti trećeg tendera gde bi PKB ponudio jedan dinar za kupovinu kombinata ili će se dugovanja rešavati na drugi način.

Мislim da bi grad trebao da preuzme PKB i da od njega napravi javno preduzeće. Ako već imamo jedno koje snabdeva grad strujom, drugo vodom, treće se brine o kanalizaciji itd... logično je da imamo i jedno koje će se brinuti o ishrani. PKB-ovi hleb i mleko moraju da budu jeftiniji od privatnika u osnovnoj varijanti. Ako građani žele finije pecivo ili mleko sa vitaminima nema problema ali uloga PKB-a treba da bude podmirenje osnovnih potreba grada po konkurentnim cenama.

^^^ To je meni najgluplje rešenje. PKB treba razbiti na više manjih preduzeća, ograničiti im aktivnosti da ne mogu da menjaju delatnost sledećih 30-50 godina, i podeliti akcije građanima. Šta god ostane u rukama države, piši propalo.

Window Farms: An experiment in urban agriculture

Gardening enthusiasts living in cities will certainly cheer for Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray’s Window Farms experiment. The artist-in-residence duo at Eyebeam have teamed up to develop a DIY system for creating “suspended, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield light-augmented” vertical gardens that will enable anyone to start their own garden right in their very own window. Britta and Rebecca were showcasing their prototype at Eyebeam last week and have enlisted a dozen or so volunteers that are building their own farms — all to go on display in windows throughout NYC from May 31 to July 14.

The prototype that we saw at Eyebeam was composed of several vertical columns with re-purposed water bottles that each held a potted plant. The set-up also included a tub of water elevated above the vertical garden that allowed water to drip through the columns — a catch basin was also placed at the bottom to catch the water that was not absorbed by the plants. Britta and Rebecca also told us that at home, they use a pump to cycle the water back through the system.

Although the primary intention of the project is to prove that individuals can develop their own systems for growing food in their NYC (or other tiny) apartment, Britta and Rebecca see this project as part of their greater interest in something they call R&DIY, which stands for Research and Do-It-Yourself. Britta and Rebecca worked with a group at Eyebeam to develop experimental window farms. By engaging a community with their urban agriculture experiment, the duo is out to show that this group method can become part of a greater trend towards the use of social networks to institute change on a local scale.

Dragonfly Vertical Farm for a Future New York

Modeled after the wings of a dragonfly, this incredible urban farm concept for New York City’s Roosevelt Island intends to ease the problems of food mileage and shortage, and reconnect consumers with producers. Urban farming is a growing trend amongst savvy city dwellers today, but in a densely packed borough like Manhattan, growth must come vertically. Spanning 132 floors and 600 vertical meters, the Dragonfly can accommodate 28 different agricultural fields for the production of fruit, vegetables, grains, meat and dairy. A combination of solar and wind power make Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut’s Dragonfly concept %100 self sufficient.

In this utopian superstructure offices, research labs, housing, and communal areas are interspersed between orchards, farms, and production rooms. Plant and animal farming is arranged throughout the Dragonfly’s steel and glass set of wings so as to maintain proper soil nutrient levels and reuse of biowaste.

The spaces between the wings are designed to take advantage of solar energy by accumulating warm air in the exo-structure during winter. Cooling in the summer will be facilitated through natural ventilation and evapo-perspiration from the plants.

Exterior vertical gardens filter rain water which is then mixed with domestic liquid waste. Together they are treated organically before being recirculated for farm use, preserving and distributing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. This urban farm, perhaps more appropriate for Dubai than New York, is intended to be cultivated by its own inhabitants, thus closing the loop of self-sustenance.

Zašto privatizacija nije dobro rešenje za PKB korporaciju
Država sigurniji gazda od tajkuna

Beograd - U narednih mesec dana trebalo bi da bude predložen novi model rešavanja statusa PKB korporacije, nekadašnjeg Poljoprivrednog kombinata Beograd. Da li će predlog Dragana Đilasa, gradonačelnika Beograda, da PKB postane javno preduzeće u vlasništvu grada biti realizovan pokazaće vreme. U prilog ideji o stvaranju još jednog javnog preduzeća u nadležnosti grada je i upozorenje Saše Dragina, ministra poljoprivrede, da to ministarstvo neće dozvoliti da bilo ko iskoristi privatizaciju, kako bi jeftino došao u posed plodnog zemljišta.


Milan Prostran, sekretar Odbora za poljoprivredu Privredne komore Srbije, u izjavi za Danas ističe da u rešavanju sudbine PKB korporacije ne bi trebalo žuriti, ali ne isključuje mogućnost privatizacije. Naš sagovornik, međutim, upozorava da bi budući kupac lako mogao da odluči da se oslobodi stočnog fonda i viška zaposlenih, što bi bio siguran znak da ga zanima samo zemljište.

- Ukoliko bi se takav scenario ipak dogodio, to bi značilo da je tržište ostalo bez oko 200.000 litara mleka i nekoliko hiljada tona mesa što bi potrošači svakako osetili. Ne treba zaboraviti da je jedna od prednosti PKB-a upravo povezanost biljne i stočne proizvodnje sa preradom i plasmanom. Osim toga, PKB je udaljen samo 15 kilometara od dvomilionskog tržišta glavnog grada. Pogodnost je i to što PKB ima visok procenat državnog kapitala, oko 35 odsto, koji je nastao supstitucijom dugovanja prema budžetu - ističe Prostran.

On podseća da su svi dosadašnji pokušaji privatizacije ovog kombinata propali, pre svega zato što PKB koristi oko 17.000 hektara državne zemlje koja se može davati u zakup, ali ne može da bude predmet privatizacije. Prostran ukazuje i na činjenicu da je država uložila značajna finansijska sredstva u melioraciju i isušivanje močvarnog zemljišta na kome su sada oranice.

- Nije na odmet podsetiti i na dosadašnje greške u privatizaciji velikih poljoprivrednih sistema koje se još uvek „leče“. U tom kontekstu pomenuo bih privatizaciju inače uzornih poljoprivrednih gazdinstava u okolini Sombora, čija je proizvodnja propala ili su ugovori sa novima vlasnicima raskinuti. Sada grad Sombor pokušava da te firme reorganizuje po ugledu na „beogradski model“ o stvaranju javnog preduzeća. Ali, PKB je specifičan slučaj s obzirom na to da zakonska regulativa o glavnom gradu dopušta mogućnost stvaranja javnog preduzeća - ističe Prostran.

Sudeći prema izjavi gradonačelnika Dragana Đilasa, grad će „učiniti sve da preduzeća koja hrane Beograd postanu profitabilna, što u slučaju PKB-a znači zaustavljanje privatizacije i opstanak kombinata u vlasništvu države, dok bi u međuvremenu bilo određeno šta je građevinsko, a šta poljoprivredno zemljište.

Inicijativa gradskih vlasti naišla je na podršku Ministarstva poljoprivrede, šumarstva i vodoprivrede, kao i Agencije za privatizaciju, a upućen je i predlog da se PIK Zemun, sa oko 3.500 hektara obradivih površina kao i kombinat „Dragan Marković“ u Obrenovcu, pripoje PKB-u. Procenjuje se da bi novi vlasnik PKB-a u startu izgubio prednost koju korporacija sada ima, a to je proizvodnja na velikim površinama. Osim toga, novi vlasnik ne bi bio u poziciji kakvu sada ima PKB, jer prema odredbama Zakona o zemljištu, lokalne samouprave imaju pravo da površine koje su u vlasništvu države izdaju u zakup drugim pravnim licima, pri čemu se 40 odsto ostvarenog prihoda sliva u opštinsku kasu dok preostalih 60 odsto prihoduje državni budžet, što znači da bi u slučaju privatizacije, opštine bile stimulisane da oglase nadmetanje za zemljište u kome novi korisnik ne bi imao prednost.

Kompromisno rešenje

- Očekujem da će u naredne dve nedelje Vlada Srbije usvojiti zaključak o podržavljenju PKB-a. Jer, ideja je dobra i zadovoljava kako interese PKB-a, koji će „znati“ kojim površinama za jesenju setvu raspolaže, dok će grad Beograd sprečiti prenamenu zemljišta - izjavio je za Danas Milan Veljović, generalni direktor PKB korporacije.

Gordon Graff’s Skyfarm for Toronto

The UN predicts that we will need 60% more food over the next 30 years in order to meet the demands of the world’s ever-growing population, and one designer has found an interesting place to look for other alternatives for growing food as agriculturally viable land becomes more and more scarce. That is, up! Skyfarm is a vertical farm designed by Gordon Graff, a student in the Master of Architecture program at the University of Waterloo. The vertically set farm for Toronto is intent on meeting the needs of a tightly packed planet in the face of a limited food supply, while removing dependence on the food transportation via energy intensive and emission heavy methods.

Instead of soil, Skyfarm’s plants float on trays of nutrient-rich water, growing hydroponically over 59 stories stacked half a dozen storeys deep.Farmed within a controlled environment, crops will no longer be subject to the vagaries of climate, infestation, or disease and the dense hydroponic agriculture can guarantee considerable yields. With the potential to operate year round, one indoor acre has been estimated to be able to yield the equivalent of between four and six outdoor acres, or enough food for 50,000 people a year. With the installation of several Skyfarms in the neighborhoods of especially large cities, the prospect to dramatically transform local food production is there.

However, the greatest pitfall of this system is also related to the ability, and in turn necessity, to maintain such a controlled environment. The availability and dispersion of natural light in particular proves to be an obstacle, and the building will be entirely dependent on electric lighting of up to 82 million kwH per year. Issues also arise in the growing crops hydroponically, a system which is much more water intensive than simple land irrigation.

However, keen to these issues Graff designed the Skyfarm to be a self-sustaining, low impact system. The building will be equipped with its own bio-gas plant able to produce methane from its own waste which could be burned to generate its own electricity. Moreover, to the city’s advantage, when Skyfarm is unable to produce enough waste to power itself (approximately 50%) Graff suggests reclaiming the waste and sewage that travels to civic composting facilities and diverting it to Skyfarm’s anaerobic digester to produce the methane it needs. And the water issue? Enter the Living Machine, a patented biological water-filtration system that would recover waste water from sewage and redirect right on over to Skyfarm’s hydroponic system.

Floating Farmacy Provides Plants and Herbs to Heal London

Traditional medicine may be the best choice for some ailments, but sometimes all we need is a little help from Mother Nature. Samantha Lee’s Farmacy is a floating urban farm that grows medicinal plants and herbs in a series of nets along the brick wall of Regent’s canal. The factory’s design employs a waterwheel to wash, dry, grind, and distill herbs into their commercial state.

The Farmacy was designed in response to a challenge from Nannette Jackowski and Ricardo de Ostos’s vertical studio at the Architectural Association to find out if extremes of programmatic effectiveness blend with the fragility of human habitat.

According to Lee, “the growth of the herbs takes place within nets, stretched along the deteriorated brick wall of Regent’s canal, where visitors either pass by to experience the fragrance of the herbal gardens, or can purchase from the pharmacies.” Lee’s Farmacy will only grow herbs and plants common to a certain place in an attempt to mesh with the area’s natural habitat. The Steampunk-inspired, waterwheel-like design could blend in perfectly along the water’s edge in any city, but is especially suited to the atmosphere of London.

Plantagon: Geodesic Dome Farm of the Future

Lots of cities have farmers markets, but most — if not all — of the produce comes from rural farmers that use oil-intensive methods of transportation to cart around their food. With 80% of all people on the planet projected to live in cities by 2050, food production will have to move into cities if it is to remain cost-efficient. A Swedish-American company called Plantagon has conceived of an incredible solution: a massive urban greenhouse contained within a geodesic dome. The vertical farm, which consists of a spiral ramp inside a spherical dome, is currently in the development stages.

According to Plantagon, the farm “will dramatically change the way we produce organic and functional food. It allows us to produce ecological [resources] with clean air and water inside urban environments, even major cities, cutting costs and environmental damage by eliminating transportation and deliver directly to consumers. This is due to the efficiency and productivity of the Plantagon® greenhouse which makes it economically possible to finance each greenhouse from its own sales.”

No word on how exactly the Plantagon system works, but the company says that consulting engineering firm Sweco has helped untangle the technical kinks of the project. Plantagon hopes to have its first vertical farm up and running within three years.

Futuristic London Bridge Sprouts Solar Powered Vertical Farm

Recently Chetwood Architects unveiled a stunning proposal for a futuristic London Bridge that sprouts a towering vertical farm in the midst of the Thames river. The bridge’s solar-powered spires are crowned with wind turbines and house a self-sufficent organic farm and commercial center that takes advantage of renewable energy generation, efficient use of water, solar heating, and natural ventilation.

In Medieval times, the London Bridge was an active place covered with buildings and merchants on both sides, and a major thoroughfare for people and carts to travel from one side of London to the other. That bridge is long since gone, with many bridges having replaced it since. One of those bridges was even sold to a wealthy American and reconstructed in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

Recently, the Worshipful Company of Chartered Architects (WCCA) along with the Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) held a design competition for a new inhabitated version of the London Bridge. The winner of that design competition was Laurie Chetwood with her vertical farm and public market.

Taking cues from the old bridge, Chetwood designed a concept that not only made the London Bridge a central meeting spot and place to gather, but also a place of commerce. The updated bridge, which crosses the Thames, would not only sell food, but would also produce it via a vertical farm. The bridge is centered around 2 main elements - a vertical farm and a commercial center for fresh food markets, cafes, restaurants, and residential accommodations. A pier connected to the bridge allow goods to be delivered and bought at the water level and even more produce to be grown via hydroponics. Two produce markets will be placed on either side of the bridge, one a wholesale market and the other a public organic market.


Beyond its organic farm the new bridge will also take advantage of renewable energy generation, efficient use of water and efficient heating and cooling technologies. First the vertical farm acts as a cooling tower, drawing cool air in at the bridge level and, while hot air is pushed out through the top. This natural ventilation also powers a vertical axiswind turbine placed at the top of the tower. Solar heating for hot water occurs in convection coils, while EFTE over the core of the farm provides a lightweight solar PV skin for electricity generation. Any excess heat not needed for the farm will be provided to the retailers. Rainwater collection will go to support restrooms and the hydroponic farm, and greywater will be treated and recycled.

The judges declared Chetwood’s design to be “A beautifully presented scheme, wildly imaginative yet very thoroughly considered, both in terms of its construction but also how it could sit within the wider context. The design refers to the surrounding buildings, using them as reference points and inspiration behind the form. It is also full of interesting ecological ideas and on all levels seems to work well. This was a unanimous first choice amongst the panel.”

Big Box Agriculture Transforms Grocers Into Growers

Results are in for the ReBurbia competition to re-envision the suburbs, and we’re thrilled to count Forrest Fulton among the top three winners for his Big Box Agriculture proposal! This creative and adaptive design takes advantage of empty big-box retail stores and turns them into suburban organic farms, complete with in-house chefs, restaurants, and renewable energy generation.

The very fabric of suburbia is changing as new areas develop and older areas are vacated, leaving behind empty buildings and cracking asphalt parking lots. This needn’t be the case - according to Fulton, big-box retail stores and strip malls can provide the opportunity for new growth in the form of suburban gardens and farms. Instead of just tearing everything down he proposes transforming these sites into organic farms and cutting out the middle-man retailer. Consumers can walk among the rows of produce and pick their fruit and vegetables right from the vine.

The asphalt parking lot would become an outdoor farm by layering soil and compost inside of containers placed directly on the lot, while solar trees spread throughout the fields generate power and pump it back into the grid. The roof of the big box store would partially be replaced with glass to create a greenhouse. After picking your produce, you could take it directly to an in-house chef who would prepare you a meal, or take it home with you. Imagine the gains the local food movement would face if Wal-Mart took a look at this idea and retrofitted their stores!

Za gajenje paradajza ili malina ne treba vam bašta, dovoljni su voda, struja i uređaj nazvan moćni rasadnik koji su napravili naučnici NASA.

Tehniku uzgajanja, poznatu kao aeropniks, čini stotine sićušnih cevi koje konstantno raspršuju hranljive materije po korenju biljaka, što za posledicu ima daleko brži rast od normalnog.
Mikro-cevi snabdevaju usev superoksidovanom, hranljivom vodom, dok je seme postavljeno na sunđer koji se nalazi na vrhu uređaja.
Specijalni pokrivači postavljeni su preko semena tako da ga štite i pospešuju njegov rast, a kada biljka proklija, pokrivači se uklanjaju.
Firma „Oakthrift“ koja prodaje ove minijaturne rasadnike tvrdi da su plodovi veći, snažniji i brže rastu nego biljke koje se uzgajaju u normalnim uslovima.
– Već nakon pet dana se mogu videti prve klice. Da bi posađena biljka u normalnim okolnostima porasla, potrebno je oko 120 dana, a s ovim uređajem taj period iznosi 90, dok leti, kada ima više svetlosti očekujte da vam biljke i voće porastu za svega 60 dana. To je fantastično, možete uzgajati maline, jagode i ukusni čeri paradajz dok god imate seme – kaže Entoni Fridmen, menadžer prodaje „Oakthrifta“.
Uređaj se već koristi u velikim komercijalnim povrtnjacima, a pravi se u dve veličine. Manji, koji je pogodan za uzgajanje voća i cveća visok je 15 cm, dug dvadeset i širok samo pet centimetara. Veći aparat košta oko 60 funti i pogodniji je za uzgajanje krupnijeg povrća poput krompira.
Prednost ovog sistema je ta što biljke nisu izložene šoku koji nastaje zbog promena u spoljašnjem okruženju, što ga i čini mnogo efikasnijim, ali proizvođači uređaja naglašavaju da hrana proizvedena na ovaj način nije organska. Uzgajanje uz pomoć hranljivih sastojaka, nije organsko, ali je potpuno bezopasno – tvrde stručnjaci.

Pre godinu ili više dana sam pominjao članak o fabrici za gajenje povrća. Konačno sam ga našao, članak je napisan pre ravno dvadeset godina.

Ovaj eksperiment ipak nije uspeo, i pored fantastičnih rezultata, uglavnom zbog ogromne potrošnje (skupe) struje. Fabrika je zatvorena u periodu 1992-1993.

Ja ne znam ni za jedan drugi način kako apsolutno sveže i da upotrebim modernu kovanicu organsko povrće dobiti od semena u vremenskom periodu od 22 do 28 dana (u zavisnosti od kulture). Za ovih dvadeset godina razne tehnologije uštede energije kao i alternative u vidu solarne i eolske energije su postale komercijalno dostupne. Recimo da ovakvoj fabrici treba par megavata energije za neometan rad (toliko troše i pojedine fabrike u Srbiji). Par vetrenjača u saradnji sa solarnim panelima bi mogle da pokriju dobar deo potreba za strujom (dve vetrenjače od po 5MW plus nešto od novijih solarnih panela). Fabrika može da radi 24/7 godinama, slično fabrikama čipova.

Veujem da kada bude bio rešen problem sa skupom strujom, njive će konačno izgubiti svoju primarnu namenu (gajenje hrane) jer će svako naseljeno mesto moći da proizvodi onoliko koliko mu je potrebno (brže i višeg kvaliteta), pri čemu sam pogon čak ni ne mora da bude nad zemljom. Za što ne bi mogli da kupujemo jagode u januaru za 20-tak dinara kilo?

Vertical Farm Eco City is a Wind Powered Wonderland

Studio Tjep’s Oogst 1000 Wonderland is a towering agricultural amusement park that makes farming fun by giving visitors the opportunity to take part in a self-sustaining vertical farm. The towering eco community houses a restaurant, a wind-powered amusement park, a farm that is tended by guests, and a biogas system recycles the waste they produce into fuel.

Oogst 1000 Wonderland takes the structure of traditional Dutch farm buildings and rearranges them so that everything is “linked by technology proposed in the greenhouse village (Utrecht, the Netherlands) in order to create a self-sustainable system.” The self-sustaining amusement park can accomodate up to 1,000 people per day, and all of the food used in the on-site restaurants is grown within the structure and its surrounding fields.

Visitors to the park are completely engaged in the vertical farm’s daily functions. Hotel guests who work as farmers during their stay can stay for free, and users get paid 0.50 euros when they use the toilets, which produce fuel for an on-site biogas energy system. Studio Tjep hasn’t how much it would cost to build the Oogst, but such a self-sustaining wonderland should have little trouble recouping the investment into construction.

Smarter Cities: Vertical Farming Could Ease World’s Agricultural Woes

By 2050, the world’s population will have increased by 3 billion people, requiring an additional chunk of arable land the size of Brazil in order to grow enough food. Add to that the potential loss of coastal property from rising sea levels, crop loss from drastic weather related incidents, and the need to reforest large swaths of land to sequester CO2. What we’re left with is a global mess that could be helped by a new agricultural technique – vertical farming. Located in an urban setting, the vertical farm is a win-win idea that automates the production of food in a more sustainable manner, by reducing waste, pollution and carbon emissions.

By the time 2050 rolls around, 80% of the world’s population will dwell in an urban setting. With more and more people focused on healthy, organic food bought locally, the demand is even greater to bring food production closer to the city. Vertical farms are not meant to eliminate traditional rural farming, but merely to reduce the strain put on the land and allow some of it to return to nature and forest. For every indoor acre farmed, 10 to 20 outdoor acres of farmland could return to their natural ecological state, which in most cases is hardwood forest.

Local and urban vertical farms have many eco-benefits for both the surrounding region and the planet. Vertical farms will rely solely on hydroponic organic farming techniques, which means no pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and no pollution injected into waterways. Vertical farms will be highly efficient and densely built, eliminating heavy machinery and farming equipment responsible for a significant amount of agricultural emissions. Water for irrigation will likely come from treated rainwater, grey or blackwater. And water use can be significantly reduced by recycling water and through the efficient use and reuse of water inside the farm.


Located in the city center, shipping and its associated environmental impact will be practically eliminated. Crops themselves will be monitored closely and provided with the exact growing conditions necessary to each species, thereby improving yields. Indoor controlled growth eliminates crop loss due to weather and natural disasters such as flood, drought or hurricanes. On top of that, a boom of urban, green-tech jobs will become available for growers, researchers, technicians, vendors and more.

In order to create such a high tech growing machine, a number of sustainable technologies will be integrated into one building. All of these technologies are currently available, but not all have been combined into one site yet. Gray and blackwater, along with rainwater will be treated for irrigation use, which will be combined with water recovery systems to collect unused water for use in aeroponic and hydroponic growing. Environmental conditions will be tightly controlled for each crop, maximizing growth, while minimizing the use of water and nutrients. Waste from plants will be either composted for fertilizer or will be combined with animal waste and used as a fuel within the building. Energy will be generated from renewable resources like the sun and wind, while energy efficient building technologies will minimize energy needs. Ideally the building could create more energy than it needs and feed the excess back onto the grid.


Crop production would become a year round activity and makes one acre of indoor growing area equivalent to 4-6 outdoor acres or more. Inside the farm will grow and care for all sorts of edibles, like vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, poultry, fish, pigs. A leading researcher on vertical farms, Dickson Despommier from Columbia University, estimates one vertical farm is enough to feed 50,000 people.

While some may argue that treating the farm like an industrialized factory is moving too far away from nature, the concept has too many benefits to be ignored. Both people and the planet would benefit by such treatment of agriculture and location of some farms in closer proximity to the city centers. Vertical farms could never replace traditional agriculture, but it would certainly take the pressure off the arable land to produce all the food we will need and hopefully eliminate the need to resort to genetically modified crops, strife over water, or food shortages.

Када сам отворио ову тему, очекивао сам да је то клуб оних који, конкретно, гаје нешто у својим двориштима или на својим њивама.

Постови су интересантни, али нас удаљавају од конкретног.

Једини цензурисани коментар који сам скоро имао на вестима Политике био је о уништавању сточног фонда државним мерама субвенција. Субвенције за краве може добити само онај који има бар 5 грла стоке. За 5 грла стоке, потребно је око 5 хектара на којима се производи сточна храна, а просечно пољопривредно газдинство у Србији има 3,5 хектара. Чак и ако би пољопривредник закупио нове њиве, да осигура храну за 5 уместо 2 краве, питање је да ли ће бити у стању да прошири тржиште за свој сир, и може бити принуђен да млеко продаје великим млекарама за 28 динара. А да ли има шталу за 5 крава + по неко теле? 85% пољопривредних произвођача у Србији уопште не добија субвенције, а 3% пољопривредника покупи 80% субвенција. Последица је да је за само 2 године, 2007 и 2008, сточни фонд у околини Београда преполовљен.

О индустријској пољопривреди, какву стимулишу држава, факултети, лоби фармацеутске и хемијске индустрије, боље да не помињем!

Радојичић: Моја стратегија за даљи развој Београда - још већа улагања у његов огроман пољопривредни потенцијал

Град Београд са 170.000 хектара обрадивог земљишта има изузетно велике пољопривредне потенцијале и у тај ресурс морамо константно улагати како бисмо помогли људима који се баве овом граном привреде, а у исто време додатно развијати еколошке концепте здраве исхране и еко-туризма, рекао је градоначелник Београда проф. др Зоран Радојичић гостујући у емисији „Плодови“ на ТВ Прва.

Радојичић је подсетио да је недавно имао прилику да обиђе пољопривредно газдинство породице Табаковић у Великој Моштаници, у оквиру акције „Градоначелник у вашем дому, вама на услузи“.

– Моји домаћини се осим класичном пољопривредом баве и израдом пластеника, за које су уверени да су квалитетнији од већине на тржишту. Табаковићи имају 55 ари земљишта под пластеницима, а сваке године технолошки унапређују своју производњу. Сваке године произведу 500.000 главица зелене салате, а циљ им је да достигну двоструко већу бројку. Имају тржиште и шта год да произведу не постоји проблем са пласманом робе. У њиховом пословању постоји јасан концепт, а разговарали смо и на тему свега онога што би Град могао да учини да њихов живот и пословање учини квалитетнијим и лакшим. Примера ради, део пута који користе раније је реконструисан, али је потребно урадити додатну санацију, што намеравамо да спроведемо у дело. Породица Табаковић је 2018. године добила Награду града Београда за успехе које је остварила у области пољопривреде, па се може рећи да је Град већ препознао квалитет посла који обављају – рекао је Радојичић.

Он је истакао да је Град Београд ове године за развој пољопривреде обезбедио 180 милиона динара у облику субвенција преко Секретаријата за привреду, од чега је 30 милиона намењено пчеларству, 100 милиона за набавку механизације, 10 милиона за сточарство, а 30 за повртарство и воћарство.

– Износ који Град обезбеђује за ову намену се константно повећава од 2012. године. Пре неколико недеља обишао сам и једно успеђно пољопривредно газдинство у општини Сурчин. Ова породица током претходних ратова избегла са својих огњишта и дом пронашла у нашем граду. Њихов пример нам показује колико људи својим радом могу да постигну и дају допринос целокупном развоју локалне заједнице. Посебно је важно стимулисати младе људе да се баве пољопривредом.У питању су веома вредни и посвећени људи који живе од резултата свог рада – нагласио је градоначелник.

Радојичић је подсетио да Београд заузима површину од 320.000 хектара, од чега је 170.000 хектара обрадиво земљиште.

– У нашем граду је регистровано 30.000 домаћинстава која се баве пољопривредом. У питању је огроман ресурс који би требало развијати и у који би требало улагати. У данашње време, када је концепт здраве исхране и екологије јако важан, као и еколошки туризам, јасно је да морамо водити рачуна о сваком детаљу приликом планова за даљи напредак у тим областима. Концепт здраве хране, еколошког туризма и етно-домаћинстава не може себи да приушти много светских градова и Београд ће наставити да развија те области – поручио је Радојичић.

Градоначелник је додао да у Београду доста младих жели да се бави пољопривредом као и да ће Град наставити да им помаже.

-Приликом конкурса се води рачуна о томе и млади пољопривредници често имају предност. Град Београд води рачуна и о едукацији, па постоји читав низ едукативних радионица и других начина информисања људи о свему значајном за покретање породичног бизниса, али и пласирања производа и увођења иновација у производњу. Постоји и „smart city“ концепт развоја пољопривреде, са низом дигиталних и „паметних“ решења у овој привредној грани. Примера ради, Израел је веома добро развио тај концепт. Млади људи лакше прихватају концепт дигиталних решења у развоју пољопривредне производње, а Град и држава који дају подршку таквом начину пословања повећавају шансу да задрже људе у пољопривреди. Све то свакако мора да буде праћено адекватним развојем инфраструктуре, како би људи не само остајали, већ се и враћали у домовину – рекао је градоначелник.

Радојичић је истакао да често обилази суграђане јер на терену чује све о њиховим проблемима и потребама.

– На тај начин остајем информисан о свему што је битно за суграђане. Често желе да знају на који начин могу да конкуришу за субвенције око набавке механизације, али и унапређења пољопривредне производње уопште. Занима их како лакше да дођу до помоћи око противградних мрежа, система за наводњавање, едукације, али и како најлакше доћи до излагачког места на међународним пољопривредним сајмовима. Више од 1.700 људи је конкурисало на градским конкурсима који су везани за пољопривреду – рекао је Радојичић.

Према његовим речима, правилан развој града је од велике важности и нема алтернативу.

– Имамо велики замах у грађевинској индустрији, на шта смо веома поносни, а велико задовољство представља чињеница да је Београд инвестициони центар овог дела Европе. Страни инвеститори желе да улажу, видимо да се у свим деловима Београда гради. Квалитет живота мора да буде исти за све грашђане, билод а они живе у централним или рубним градскимопштинама.. Пољопривредом се највише баве становници рубних општина – Лазаревца, Младеновца или Гроцке, али и неке централне градске општине се могу похвалити пољопривредном производњом, попут Палилуле или Вождовца. Београд је један од ретких градова који на својој територији има површине са засађеним виноградима, на шта смо посебно поносни. Морамо додатно развијати пољопривредне потенцијале града и водити рачуна да не нарушимо баланс између урбаног развоја и очувања зелених површина.

Пољопривреда је област у коју морамо улагати, морамо поштовати сваког суграђанина који се бави овим послом, јер је то наша највећа снага – поручио је Радојичић.

Prodali su zemljište PKB-a za kikiriki, a da su tih 17 000 hektara prodali poljoprivrednim proizvođačima kao što je naprimer porodica Tabaković, ili bar dali u dugogodišnji najam, imali bi nekoliko hiljada porodičnih poljoprivrednih gazdinstava u najbližoj okolini Beograda koji bi imali siguran plasman svojih proizvoda.

Plastenici za palilulske poljoprivrednike​

Predsednik Gradske opštine Palilula Miroslav Ivanović obišao je poljoprivrednike u Borči, Ovči, Velikom Selu i Slancima, koji su od Opštine Palilula dobili na korišćenje 18 plastenika.

Ivanović je razgovarao sa domaćinima o njihovom radu i životu kao poljoprivrednih proizvođača i izazovima sa kojima se suočavaju. Tom prilikom je poručio, da je Gradska opština Palilula uvek otvorena za sve njih i da je spremna da im bude podrška, kako u novim idejama, tako i u eventualnim problemima.

Poljoprivrednici su izrazili zahvalnost Opštini i predsedniku Ivanoviću na pomoći i dodeljenim plastenicima, koji će unaprediti uzgoj i kvalitet njihovog povrća i zaštiti ga od nepovoljnih vremenskih uslova.
