Serbian Lawmakers Approve Luxury Trump Hotel on Historic Bombing Site. — The New York Times.​

Despite a fraud investigation into officials who endorsed the project, Parliament used an extraordinary provision in the Constitution to push the plans through. The Serbian Parliament approved a new law Friday to tear down an architectural landmark that NATO bombed in 1999, stripping it of cultural protections and clearing the way for President Trump’s family to replace it with a luxury hotel.

Plans to build a half-billion-dollar Trump-branded hotel and apartments on the site of the landmark, the former General Staff military complex in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, had been stalled after government officials who endorsed it were charged with fraud. But last weekend, lawmakers from the governing party of President Aleksandar Vucic announced they would use an extraordinary provision in the Constitution to introduce a law that would restart the project.

The legislative wrangling drew condemnation from students, prosecutors, preservationists, and opposition politicians in the latest provocation after more than a year of anticorruption protests against Mr. Vucic’s government. As debate over the provision began this week, the European Commission issued fresh concerns about eroding rule of law and democracy in Serbia, which has sought for more than a decade to join the European Union.

Yet there had been little doubt that the legislation would pass. It was advanced by Mr. Vucic’s Serbian Progressive Party and its allies, which hold a majority in Parliament, and officials said Friday it would take effect on Saturday. The lawmaker who introduced the measure, Milenko Jovanov, said in Parliament on Tuesday that it would revitalize bombed-out buildings that have sat largely empty “with no plan for what to do with them.”

He also said the hotel project could curry favor with the Trump administration at a time Serbia is trying to maintain relations both with Moscow and the West. Mr. Trump has imposed a 35 percent tariff on Serbian imports, and American sanctions have hampered a Russian-owned company that is Serbia’s main oil supplier, as well as some of Mr. Vucic’s allies.

“We are opening up space and creating opportunities for the country to move forward,” Mr. Jovanov said. “That’s our main goal and our main task.”

“Whether that will lead to improving relations with the Trump administration, with the United States—honestly, I would like that,” he added.

Critics said the law would demolish a building that one opposition lawmaker, Marinika Tepic, called “a symbol of resistance and proof that a nation that has been shattered and a state that has collapsed can rise again.”

“Today, you want to turn that symbol into a luxury complex, just to please Donald Trump,” Ms. Tepic said during the parliamentary debate. “On the very spot where bombs once fell, you now plan to pour champagne.”

The General Staff building was completed in the 1960s and is considered by some a masterpiece of post-World War II modernist architecture. It was devastated by NATO airstrikes in 1999 to punish Serbia’s aggressions against ethnic Albanians in neighboring Kosovo.

Mr. Trump first floated the idea of building the hotel in 2013. In May 2024, Serbia approved plans to build the 175-room hotel, retail space, and more than 1,500 residential units on the General Staff site under a 99-year lease with a company affiliated with Jared Kushner, Mr. Trump’s son-in-law. The plans also included a memorial to victims of the NATO bombings.

Soon after Mr. Trump was re-elected, the Serbian government declared the site was no longer considered a culturally protected asset. However, Serbia’s organized-crime prosecutor this year charged the director of the state-run culture institute with falsifying documents to justify stripping the complex of its protected status. Other government culture officials have since been charged.

The new law overrides existing regulations that govern the use of the complex, including its protections as a Serbian heritage site. The legislation was drafted under a constitutional procedure that experts said was intended for use only in extreme circumstances. It was not clear whether the law could quash the criminal cases against the officials. In a statement Tuesday, the organized-crime prosecutor’s office said Mr. Vucic had “attempted to exercise inappropriate and unauthorized influence” by criticizing the cases in a TV interview. But prosecutors avoided discussing the case itself.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Vucic said that the president’s office was not involved in the project and referred questions to Serbia’s powerful finance minister, Sinisa Mali. Mr. Mali, who has ties to the White House through Richard Grenell, Mr. Trump’s longtime ally and current envoy for special missions, did not respond to requests for comment. Mr. Vucic and his allies have used the extraordinary constitutional provision to push other projects forward—potentially before courts can consider appeals to stop them, said Vladimir Obradovic, a Belgrade University professor.

“That’s their modus operandi—to remove institutional and public oversight, create a space for corruption, and cover it with the pretext of urgency and development,” said Professor Obradovic, a former politician who opposed Mr. Vucic’s government. He is also a member of an independent panel investigating government shortfalls that contributed to the collapse of a train station canopy last year that killed 16 people.

Those deaths fueled the protests against Mr. Vucic, including a hunger strike that began this week outside Parliament by the mother of one of the victims.

Načelniku generalštaba i vojsci pred očima ruše istorijsko sedište vojske i sadašnje sedište VBA, a ta sama VBA vija vojnike jer privatno lajkuju objave vezane za proteste. Nema tu jednog Srbina da je ostao a izgleda ni čoveka. To su sve kao oni automati za kafu što rade na kovani i papirni novac.

Један »мали« детаљ који пролази испод радара. Два историјска објекта од изузетног значаја су такође убацили ђутуре са генералштабом оштећеним у бомбардовању од стране НАТО фашиста у овај Lex specialis, и сада ће, или бити порушени, или претворени у Трампов хотел. Ово је буквално распродаја, и понижавање главних симбола наше независности и државе!

Није исто и заправо смо дозволили горе и од тог најгорег хипотетичког сценариа у Аушвицу - Дозволили смо усташама да узму Јасеновац, да га поруше и да сада тамо фалсификују историју.

Генералштаб није симбол страдања 99е. Евентуално може бити симбол лоших трипова југо-срба и њиховог комплекса величине. Може бити и јединствен по томе што је чак у два наврата био симбол окупације и наметња воље - Први пут кад се градио и сутра кад се буде рушио.
Прави симболи српског страдања су на сваком кораку на Косову, у Крајинама, Лици, Херцеговини, Босни, Крагујевцу, по Старој Србији, Топлици...

Ти ретарди би сравнили целу Србију када би могли, али важно је да се поносе српском заставом у свакој прилици и ките њоме као сврака пауновим перјем, а издали су државу на сваки могући начин. У целини, да ти поклониш ове историјске државне зграде од националног значаја у најстрожијем административном центру Београда, држави која нас је бомбардовала, која нас угњетава и сада, и отела нам Космет и драгоцене руднике успут, попут Трепче која вреди више од БПД-а целе Европе, то је срамота за целу нашу земљу. Народ ово не сме да дозволи. Неће ништа остати од јадне Србије док се власт не смени, било милом или силом. Чекамо и чекамо, а на крају ћемо изгубити најважнију борбу, а то је заштита земље и народа. Док избори дођу, ни камен на камену неће остати поред ове радикалске пошасти! Наоружати се, орагнизовати, и ко преживи — причаће.

Zato treba obnavljati stare zgrade i ne glumiti ludilo i proglašavati to za kič.

Zamislite da sruše sve i onda za koju godinu se i sa naše strane nađu pametni koji su protiv obnove.

Evo, sada gledamo uživo kako to sve izgleda.
 
Опозиција "успешно" брани све што је узела да брани. Потомци оних који су одбранили и ту шугаву југославију, па и зграду. Ни за то нису способни. Чега се дотакну, пропадне. Боље да се повуку док не оде цела земља.

Pa ni to nije srećno rešenje. Pogledajmo onu grdosiju koju su natandrčili na postojeću zgradu u Cara Dušana. Tačno vidiš da je neko iz bog te pitaj kog razloga prihvatio da sačuva ljušturu stare zgrade. I tako je većinski gde čuvamo stare zgrade / objekte.​

Неутрални, у демократијама (као што је наша - призната од свих земаља као што је и сама власт призната јер од свих планетарних ентитета добија легитимитет) гласају на изборима за људе и програме. Господа из ЗЛФ су могли чак и овај пројекат да представе како су ОНИ замислили па да на конто тога добију неког новог гласача. Они међутим то не раде. Они само критикују како нешто не треба да изгледа. Са таквом политиком нама нема спаса, јер управо њих власт вуче за нос.
